MIPS and Prediction
- Describe
the curve of your graph. How did it start and end?
The graph started off flat and
made a sharp turn upwards at the end.
- Compare
the two lines, How does Moore’s
law compare to the real progress computers made?
Moore’s law is an over expectation but the
actual graph does resemble the predictions given.
- How
many times faster are today’s computers than the
first Altair?
Today’s computers are 42427 times
faster than the first Altair.
- Is Moore’s Law a good
description of the increases seen in computers?
Moore’s Law is a good description of speed
increase in computers because they match in an expodential
graph.
- How
many time faster are todays
personal computers than the ENIAC, the first electronic computer (.000001
MIP)?
Today’s computers are
42,427,000,000 times faster than the ENIAC.
- Was
this curve similar or different than your previous graph?
The curve in this new graph is
similar to my The Past graph. It starts
off flat-ish and ends sharply upwards.
- What
year did you predict computers will exceed human intelligence?
I predicted that in 2031, the
computers would exceed human intelligence.
- How
old will you be that year?
I will be 45 that year.
- If computers
have the capacity to handle data as fast as humans, does that mean they
will necessarily have our abilities? What could be limitations?
Having the capacity to handle data
as fast as humans does not mean computers can have our abilities. Some factors may be virtue and vices that go
with the goodness and badness of people.
Others may be the inclusion of human nature.
Overview
- When
did computers have the data ability of Bacteria? Of Worms?
Already in 1971, the computer was
above and around that of Bacteria. In
1972, the computers had the 1mps of worms.
- What
is the current intelligence of computers (in 2004) similar to?
It is similar to a lizard’s
intelligence.

- What
year did you predict computers will surpass human capacity?
In 2031, computers will surpass
human capacity.
- What
do you predict about computers in the future beyond your graph? Will
the trends change?
I predict a continuous follow on Moore’s Law and an
unchanging trend for a while. However,
there will be an eventual plateau for increase in computer ability where the Moore’s Law will be a too
much of an overestimation.
- If
computers become as smart as humans, will our relationship with them
change? How?
If computers become as smart as humans, there will probably
be changes in our relationship to that of more dependent and then eventual
computer domination. Computers will
become the answer to everything and humans will be just the producers.
- How do
you feel about Artificial Intelligence? Do the benefits outweigh the
drawbacks? Explain in a paragraph.
I feel that
Artificial Intelligence is alright to a point in which it benefits us and we
are still superior to our creation.
However, when we become too dependent on this invention of ours, any
kind of disruption can bring the society down to ashes and the damage will be
great. An example is daily virus attacks
that cause loss of data and inhibit many planned task. This leads to a society hanging on Artificial
Intelligences’ end.
Super Computer Speed over Time
- What was the power of
computers in 1946 (the Mark I)?
- The power of computers
was 1E-03.
- What is happening to computer
power over time?
- As time passes,
computers are tripling in speed.
- What happens to human brain
power over time? Why?
- Human brain power is constant
because we as humans are at the level where we have capability for
knowledge and humanlike responses to our surroundings.
- According to the graph, in
what year does computer power overtake human brainpower?
- In 2007, the computer
overtakes the human brainpower.
- In what year will you be
40? What will computer power probably be then?
- I will be 40 in
2033. Computers will be 1E 17 in power.
- If a computer has 100 million
MIPS power, Does that mean it’s as smart as
humans? Explain.
- This means it is as fast
as humans and capable of the many processes occurring at the same time.

- What are two possibilities of
how AI would NOT happen?
- AI would not happen if
we took drastic measures to stop AI in the next 7 years. We could also have the world end by
human hands at a sudden meteor crash leading to the wipe out of future AI
along with humans.
